Faculty of architecture graduation project

This is a short presentation of my graduation project at the faculty of architecture at the university of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Project's theme is the design of a new marketplace in the town of Medvode, Slovenia.

Interior renders

These are some examples of my efforts to work on my 3D rendering skills. This is a visualization of a small two-floor apartment, designed within the boundaries of a 5x5x5m box.

3D texturing

At one point, I tried myself in 3D texturing for the purpose of video games. Didn't really manage to get into the industry, but I do have these two examples of the work I did to show off.

Architectural sketch

I'm putting this sketch here as an example of my freehand architectural drawing skill, such as it is. The sketch depicts a fictional composition of several prominent Italian renaissance buildings. All auxiliary construction lines used in the drawing process are visible, no erasing was involved at any point. Originally I used a black tint pen on white paper, I inverted the colors just for the purpose of this blog.

Adacta promo material

These are some illustrations I designed for Adacta, an IT company based in Ljubljana. The first two images were printed on mugs and the last one was printed on promotional badges.

Joker magazine banners

I designed these banners for the Joker magazine web page, across a time span of several years. All the depicted characters also appear in the Joker comics that I've been drawing for the magazine roughly since 1995, the most notable of them, of course, being the eponymous Joker character. The last banner is a commercial for the hard-cover collection of (most of) these comics that you can (probably) still order through the contact available on the Joker's site.

If looking at all the banners at once is a bit hard on the eyes, I apologize for the inconvenience. Just scroll down and ignore them.

Mint cafe

I made this wall painting as part of the exterior/interior architectural design of a bar. The architectural design itself was made by a friend of mine, I just designed and executed the painting, as well as some other smaller wall paintings, plus the T-shirts for the staff. The bar is called "Mint Cafe" and it is situated in BTC city, Ljubljana.
The dimensions of the painting are roughly 700cm x 180cm. It was made using pencil and exterior acrylic wall paint.

Stožice

While working on the underground part (shopping mall, parking garage) of this project, I also worked on this rather ambitious open staircase/plaza section.
Even though the execution of the whole design perhaps leaves something to be desired, I believe certain parts came out quite well, perhaps most notably this massive metal fence, which I designed myself.

In addition to also designing all four of the outdoor metal construction stairscases on the site, I also worked on the fire-emergency and ventilation exhausts on the top level, the underground atriums, the communication tower, etc. At present some of these features still remain unbuilt or unfinished.
Working on this particular staircase (last image) was especially intriguing, since its somewhat peculiar form is not a result of a design choice, but rather a result of structural necessity. There are three more levels of parking garage below the ground level in this image, so the options for the positioning of the support columns for the staircase were very limited indeed.

Joker magazine covers

Some examples of covers for the (in)famous Slovenian computer gaming magazine that I've made over the years:

Air Traffic Control Centre Interior

In 2010, while working at the Sadar+Vuga architectural office in Ljubljana, I designed several pieces of furniture for the main control room of the new Air Traffic Control Centre at Brnik, Slovenia. More specifically, I designed the workplaces for the people who monitor and direct air traffic.
The rather high-tech nature of these workplaces (movable motor-controlled parts, built-in computer and radar equipment, etc.) and the very specific ergonomic requirements involved made this a very interesting project to work on indeed.

During my time at S+V, I have also worked (for the most part, actually) on the "Football Stadium and Multipurpose Sports Hall Stožice" project. However, my personal contribution there in terms of design was quite miniscule relatively speaking, since this was (still is) a rather large project (one of the largest in Slovenia to this date I think).

Photomontage

These are two examples of photomontage work I did some time ago. The starting point in both cases was a very simple and crude image of the model (photo and render, respectively). The second image was published in the magazine "Hiše" (Houses).

ECON pavilion

"Every year since 1981, hundreds of European students of architecture have gathered each summer to discuss and work with architecture, student to student. These summerschools are organised by EASA (European Architecture Students Assembly) and happen in a new place and with a specific theme for each year. During the two weeks of the assembly, visions and experiments grow from workshops, tutored and arranged by architecture students. It is an important and inspiring gathering, with a scope that extends beyond the 400 participants and organisers. Anyone who has ever attended an EASA summerschool will have stories to tell about architecture, friendship and new ideas."

In addition to all this (the quote taken from the EASA homepage), EASA sometimes also organizes student architectural competitions. The winning projects then get built during these summerschools.

In the year 2003/2004, EASA took place in Denmark and the theme was "sustainable living". The group that won the competition that year was from the faculty of architecture in Ljubljana, Slovenia and I was a member of that group. This pavilion was the result.

The chair in the last photo was a small, unplanned addition to the interior space of the pavilion. I built it myself, even though I've never done anything similar before in my life. Despite the fact that it was a complete improvisation (no plan involved) and that it was finished fast (a couple of hours), I believe the result was a success. It was constructed out of the wooden left-overs of the pavilion's roof construction. Recycled and eco-friendly!

Joker bus 1 & 2

Joker is a Slovenian magazine that focuses primarily on the subjects of computer games, information technology and modern entertainment media. It is notable for its trademark humor and its active community of readers.

I've been making comics and illustrations for the Joker magazine since I was in primary school. During the years, I sometimes also made various web-related and advertisment-related content, perhaps most notably these two advertisements, that were mounted on two of the Ljubljana public-transportation buses and lasted approximately for a year each.

4th year main project

I did the 4th year design studio at the faculty of architecture under the tutelage of a visiting professor, architect Hainz Tesar from Austria. The goal was to design a museum of modern art at the "Šumi" location in Ljubljana.
